Virtual Tours Training

This course is made up of one full day with 5 days of WhatsApp support (plus the submission of a short video project)

It will run on: Monday 25th January 

Time:  9.00am until 15.30pm.

Course Rationale: This course is aimed at working Blue Badge  Tourist Guides who would like to deliver online Virtual Tours.

Achievements by the end of the course Attendees will be able to offer Virtual Tours on the Guild website

Format of the Lecture Morning and Afternoon sessions with a break for lunch

COURSE OUTLINE (subject to minor changes)

Section 1: Practicalities, such as knowing your computer, talking to camera, being dynamic, structuring commentary, good lighting and background, use of a Microphone etc.


Section 2: A demo in the creation of dynamic PowerPoint and Keynote presentations. We divide the groups into Keynote and PowerPoint breakout rooms.


Section 3:  We divide the students into smaller breakout groups of between 4 and 6 where they work for an hour, helping each other to create their own basic slide presentation.

12-1pm lunch.

Section 4: We come back together and the tutors will give a couple of short demos of different types of virtual tours.  We then ask for volunteers and allow 4 or 5 of the students to show their presentations, followed by general feedback.

Section 5: Video is one of the most important parts of the training but also one of the most technically difficult. This section teaches the students how to create and insert video of them talking to camera and how to insert Google Street View and Apple Flyovers.

Section 6:  Is normally taken up with an in-depth look at the Zoom platform.

Section 7:  Copyright.  A very important part of the course, particularly if the students are planning on putting recorded material on the internet.  The Institute of Tourist Guiding has created an extensive document which is given to all of the students.

Section 8: Code of Good Virtual Guiding Practice. We have created this document to ensure fair play and to ensure the same high standards and good practices are being adopted by all guides who have undertaken the course.

Section 9: Video Projects. To ensure that the students have taken on board the important points of the course, we ask that they submit a 5/6 minute video project in which they must demonstrate certain criteria. These include good technique when talking to camera, dynamic presentations and the ability to use the Zoom platform. They usually have 4 days before they need to be submitted.

Section 10: Marketing and Questions

Post Course Support

Every training group will have their own WhatsApp group where they can swap photos, share links, but most importantly ask for help from the tutors. The WhatsApp group really helps share the tech burden and create a sense of community in helping to solve tech problems.   Once the videos have been viewed by the tutors, the students can be listed on the Guild website as offering Virtual Tours.


It is important to emphasise that there are some Basic level requirements for those that wish to enter the world of virtual tours.

  • You will need to have a decent computer or laptop (very few tablets have the power to cope with hosting virtual tours).
  •  You need to be comfortable and confident IT troubleshooting with your own device.
  •  You must have a strong and stable internet connection
  •  It is expected that you will be familiar with presentation software such as PowerPoint or Key.
  •  Please note this is NOT a beginner’s course
